Four Stars
I like Kempff's pianos..
A case where the earlier mono version has the edge over the later stereo version
This set of the sonatas dates from the early 1950's and is in mono.
Poor audio quality
The performance of Kempff is excellent, but unfortunately there is some static noise in the background.
Wilhelm Kempff channels the charm and intimacy of Beethoven's music
Having listened to several complete sets of Beethoven's piano sonatas and some incomplete sets as well, I have come to the conclusion that Wilhelm Kempff's mono studio recordings from the mid-1950s comprise my overall favorite.
This is the set you are looking for !!!!!
I have several cycle sets, and Kempff surely was a most gifted Beethoven interpreter, with an improvisatory, selfless freshness that is almost always revealing and inspiring.
a dissenting opinion - updated June 2011
Original review, June 2010:
Wilhelm Kempff recorded the 32 sonatas of Beethoven three times over the course of his long career.
A fantastic cycle...
Wilhelm Kempff is most certainly among the most humane pianists in recorded history.
Had to wait on this one
Took 2 weeks before it shipped and then full 14 days to receive..
A musician rather a pianist!
In an occasion Cortot played the first movement before the astute regard of the legendary pianist Anton Rubinstein: He told him those indomitable words: \"Beethoven's piano music must not be studied.
Which One to Get, That Is The Question.
For those who are not too familiar with Kempff, he is generally regarded as one of the most reputed Beethoven interpreter after Schnabel.
