I think the bad reviews come from people going for big saltwater fish with these putting like 8# balls on them.

I have used this downrigger for trout and kokanee and it fits perfect on my pontoon boat.

This unit is a replacement for one that went overboard.

As others have noted, the depth counter doesn't really work worth a darn, but the basic set-up is good, and for a small rowboat or kayak this is probably the best practical way of downrigging.
