Herbert von Karajan, Bringer of Doom and Transcendence
You would think that Holst's "Mars, Bringer of War" would be a bullet-proof hit by now, a guaranteed thrill regardless of conductor or orchestra.
Five Stars
Excellent recording..
Splendid performance and sound. The BEST!
Herbert von Karajan is a great Bruckner conductor.
Fierce and frightening
You'd be forgiven for thinking of British composer Gustav Holst as a bit of a \"one hit wonder\" and indeed it is likely that you may never encounter another work by him.
A classic pair of recordings now in much improved remastering
These recordings, made in 1960 and 1961, show the combination of Karajan and the VPO off to their best.
My Favorite Perofrmance
I studied "The Planets" in music-school so many years ago, that one of my professors was Sir Adrian Boult himself.
Awesome
Jupiter is especially good.
Stupendous recording
Anyone who enjoys phenomenal orchestral music should purchase this recording.
Yes!
If you love Holst, The Planets, and/or Van Karajan, you'll love this CD:) I really don't know how you can get much better than this.
Planets Imperial
I have been a fan of von Karajan since the good old vinyl days.
