42 years later, still one of the finest Opera DVDs
Despite the fact that Glossop's Iago is marred by anglo-pronunciation and often the lip synchronisation and lack of singing muscles in action which correspond to the dramatic tension tends to annoy, this remains a great opera film and performance of the opera.
Great source material for MFA thesis project
Great source material for MFA Thesis project and Informance on INTERPRETING DESDEMONA FROM SHAKESPEAREAN TEXT TO VERDI’S OTELLO Applying the theory of Spousal Abuse in developing the characterization of the role..
While the Karajan version has a movie like quality, it doesn't do justice to Vickers and ...
I am in awe of Vickers and his presence as Otello.
Vickers and Freni.
If you are an opera fan you will be very familiar with Verdi's Otello, this one is something special, Jon Vickers and Mirella Freni and Peter Glossop as Iago, not the usual nasty type Iago but the scheming two faced type Iago, as he says near the start "If I were Otello, I wouldn't want and Iago near me", the whole opera is magnificent the marvellous Helden Tenor voice of Jon Vickers and the beautiful lyrical voice of Mirella Freni and the villainous baritone of Peter Glossop are really the very ideal Otello, and then the master himself Herbert von Karajan and the incomparable Berlin Philharmonic, this just has the be one of the very best best Otello productions ever.
An Otello to die for
Otello is and has always been one of my very favorite operas.
the great 20th century Otello
The omission of James McCracken fom your list of great 20th century Otello\"s completely detroys your wordy article and your claim to know what is good and what is great.
Very good, with minor flaws
This film version of Verdi's Othello -- directed and conducted by Herbert Von Karajan, a man of many talents -- is excellent in many respects, and more than adequate in most.
Make that five stars with some reservations
Prior to buying this, I already owned two magnificent DVDs of Otello, so why bother with a third?
Wonderful performance - frustrating audio
I purchased this performance in its laser disc format a number of years ago and got rid of it because the audio portion is made of extremes.
